    Letter from the Director

Dear Prospective Student,

Many of the economic challenges faced by humanity, like the problems of energy supply, health provision, sustainable growth or poverty reduction, will only be solved through advances in scientific knowledge. In turn, the economic and institutional channels through which science operates provide both incentives and constraints to scientific development.

In order to present these two faces of the interaction between economics and science, we have gathered an outstanding group of economists, scientists, consultants and public servants to be part of our faculty.

Students will receive state of the art accounts of the challenges faced in different fields of scientific research, the difficulties to be expected, realistic assessments of the expectations generated by each development, and the timing of the foreseeable transfer process from basic research results to applications. Training in economics will be oriented toward the study of markets, institutions, and firms, with an emphasis on their role in inducing innovation and research. Tools will be provided to measure the impact of public policies on research.

Our graduates’ skills will make them attractive to innovative firms, to research institutes, to consulting firms specializing in R&D, and to government agencies promoting research. The School will work closely with its sponsors to generate attractive job opportunities for its graduates.

We welcome well-prepared and highly motivated engineers, natural and social scientists, or economists wishing to develop a career based on the interface between science and economics.
