Eye on Alumni: Arik Mordoh '09
Arik Mordoh (Competition and Market Regulation) is an Economist in the Office of Health Economics (OHE) in London. He is performing an analysis of the effects of competition on the UK's National Health Service (NHS).
You are working on the OHE Commission on Competition in the NHS. What is the purpose of this project?
The purpose of the OHE Commission on Competition in the NHS is to investigate for which NHS health care services and under which circumstances competition or contest is likely to be beneficial overall and for which it is likely to be harmful. My work for the Commission has consisted of analyzing the existing evidence of the effects of competition on the quality of NHS services.
What is a typical day like for you at the OHE?
A typical day will consist of reading economic journals, preparing economic analysis for senior people, preparing material to discuss in team meetings or with clients, drafting reports and literature reviews, and attending interviews with members of academia or government officials.
I also produce original research to be published in peer-reviewed journals or appropriate to be published as peer-reviewed by OHE editorial board. It's been an unexpected opportunity to have my work peer-reviewed by important members of the British academic community.
What courses from the Barcelona GSE master program have been most valuable to you?
Essentially, all my knowledge gathered, from econometrics to theoretical models of competition, has proven to be extremely valuable for my everyday work.
What's next for you once the Commission ends?
Right after the Commission ends, I will be joining Ofgem, the UK Office of Gas and Electricity Markets. I will start work at the Retail Market division.
