IAE, UPF, and UAB Host Workshop on the Political Economy of Democracy

 

 

On June 5-7, a workshop on the Political Economy of Democracy was held in the new building of the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE-CSIC) in the Bellaterra Campus.

 

The workshop provided the opportunity for researchers from international institutions, to convene in Barcelona and share their latest research. The participants included GSE Board of Trustees Member Joaquim Silvestre (UC Davis) as well as seven GSE Affiliated Professors: Enriqueta Aragonès (IAE-CSIC), Salvador Barberà (UAB), Carmen Beviá (UAB), Patricia Funk (UPF), Daniela Iorio (UAB), Humberto Llavador (UPF), and Clara Ponsatí (IAE-CSIC).

 

Among institutions represented were Princeton University, Columbia University, LSE, Caltech, Harvard University, MIT, Yale University and three of the GSE’s founding academic institutions: the Institut d'Anàlisi Econòmica (CSIC), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

 

The three-day workshop was organized the GSE Affiliated Professors Enriqueta Aragonès (GSE and IAE-CSIC), Humberto Llavador (GSE and UPF), and Carmen Beviá (GSE and UAB), and Washington University Professor Norman Schofield. Financial support for the workshop was provided by the Fundación BBVA.

 

The workshop commenced with a greeting from Carmen Beviá, GSE Affiliated Professor and UAB Professor, who welcomed the attendees, many of whom had traveled from around the world to attend the workshop in Barcelona.

 

Topics discussed included strategies and theories of party formation, political activism and democracy, electoral system design, the foundations of democracies and other forms of government, bargaining and negotiation in politics, and other hot topics relating to the political economy of democracy.

 

The first presentation of the workshop was given by organizer Enriqueta Aragonès (IAE-CSIC) and Pilar Dellunde (UAB), who discussed their proposed study “An Automated Model of Government Formation”. The session was chaired by Helios Herrera (Columbia University).

 

The second day of the workshop commenced with a presentation by organizer Carmen Beviá (UAB) on ”Peace Agreements without Commitment ”, chaired by Gerard Padro (London School of Economics).

 

The third and final day of the workshop opened with a talk by organizer Humberto Llavador (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) on "An Agenda-Setting Model of Electoral Competition", chaired by Oriol Carbonell (Rutgers University).

 

The workshop closed with a talk by organizer Norman Schofield (Washington University) on “An Activist Model of Democracy”, chaired by Luis Corchón (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid).
